Duke of Edinburgh
A group of 17 year 10 Duke of Edinburgh students went on their ‘Practice Camping Expedition’ to Epping Forest 7th – 8th of June. Luckily, the weather was mild and clear as the students were required to hike for six hours each day carrying all of their equipment on their backs. This trip allowed the students to practice their orienteering skills, develop their camp craft and experience a lot of firsts, like sleeping in tents away from their families and cooking their own food outdoors.
The most important lessons learned were that teams need to work together to accomplish the tasks, maps need to be referenced constantly to stay on track and nonessential items can be left at home to lighten the load.
Wish the group luck on their Assessed Expedition coming up on 21st – 22nd June. If they pass this they are on their way to earning the internationally recognized Bronze Award through the Duke of Edinburgh Program.

The Bank of England Museum Visit
On Tuesday 21st May the Maths department arranged for 40 Year 7 students to visit the Bank of England Museum.
The students enjoyed a very educational ‘Pounds & Pence’ presentation and discussed where they had learnt about money, how it was made, its uses – past and present – and why we trust its value. They also learnt about prices, including why they change and how the Bank of England stops them from rising too rapidly. The students had the opportunity to explore the museum in a very well behaved manner, which was commented on and praised by the museum staff.
This timely visit was planned to coincide with this years ‘My Money Week’ w/c 3rd– 9th June 2013. During this week the students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will be engaging in a week of fun financial educational activities in maths lessons; including understanding the difference between wants and needs, opening a bank account and saving, contributing to charities, a school based competition for Year 7 entitled ‘Life without money’ and some students will also be entering a national competition ‘The A – Z of Money’. These fun activities are designed to fully engage the students and help them learn to make good financial decisions in life.
